Isle of Man Steam Packet RO-Pax: new building supervision and technical advice.

2nd Dec 2021

In a recent post of their website, Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has mentioned SeaQuest for its crucial role in the construction of their new flagship ferry Manxman at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea.

Here is what they say:

"Renowned project management company Sea Quest Marine (SQM) was set up in 2003 and now boasts a team of more than 200 across many of the major shipyards in the far east. SQM has overseen the construction, major conversion and docking of more than 420 vessels since its conception, recently delivering a number of Ro-Ro ferries for European clients. SQM now brings its experience and expertise to Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in South Korea for the delivery of Manxman.

SQM will provide on-site supervision and advice to our team on specialist areas of the build including weld inspection, pipe production and testing, paint preparation and application, electrical and machinery installation, and further down the line during the testing and trials process.

Co-Founder and CEO, Jan Anderson, is project manager of the SQM team at HMD. With a BSc in Marine Engineering and experience as a sea-going chief engineer, before moving into new-building projects at the age of 25, Jan has worked closely with shipyards, contractors and classification societies throughout his career. A former technical director at Star Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines, he has considerable familiarity with high-end passenger vessels and is the ideal candidate to be heading up the SQM team."

Steel Cutting for a new VLCC project

23rd Aug 2021

The construction of two VLCCs under SeaQuest supervision commenced today at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in Mokpo, S.Korea.

The Steel Cutting ceremony was held at the presence of yard’s project manager, Lloyd’s Register surveyors and SeaQuest Project Manager and Site Manager in quality of representatives and supervisors on behalf of Athenian Sea Carriers Ltd.

The Site Team is entirely formed by SeaQuest personnel and will follow the construction of the two 300k DWT crude oil carriers till the delivery to the Owners, scheduled in 2022 Q2 and Q3.

To-date SeaQuest has been selected by a number of owners to assist in contractual and technical negotiations, makers selection, plan approval and construction supervision of 361 vessels, including 79 crude oil tankers, from Aframax to VLCC size.

In these periods of restricted travelling to/between Far Eastern countries, more owners are addressing to SeaQuest to assist during the yard selection and negotiation phases: the fact that Jan Andersson, SeaQuest CEO & Managing Director, resides in S.Korea since over 20 years is certainly a plus for owners seeking a reliable partner from the very initial steps of their newbuilding projects.

Construction begins on Isle of Man company vessel Manxman

20th Aug 2021

Construction has today commenced on Manxman, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company’s new flagship ferry, at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea.

The 133 m-long vessel, which is due to replace the Ben-my-Chree when she comes into service in 2023, will be able to carry 949 passengers and have 495 m2 additional space for freight and vehicles.

Officials from the Steam Packet Company, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, SeaQuest Marine S.A. (specialist shipbuilding consultants), Houlder Naval Architects and Lloyds Register (Class Surveyor) were all in attendance at the milestone event - known as the steel cutting ceremony - on site in Ulsan today, where a formal pushing of the button took place to mark the first piece of steel being cut.
This signifies that the detail design of the vessel – comprising a total of around 300 detailed plans – has been finalised and agreed by the Steam Packet Company Project Team and construction can commence.

Plasma files are produced from the approved construction drawings to allow the shipyard’s plate cutting machines to automatically and accurately cut each piece of the vessel. There will be up to two months of plate cutting, panel production, plate bending and pipe production before block construction, and then keel laying, can commence.

Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Managing Director Brian Thomson said: ‘The steel cutting ceremony is a milestone occasion and cause for celebration which signifies that after years of planning, the construction of Manxman is under way. The Project Team has been working incredibly hard to ensure the project stays on track and it’s fantastic to see everything progressing as scheduled.
‘This is a very exciting time for the Company and we’re looking forward to keeping the Island community up-to-date with the progress of Manxman ahead of her coming into service, scheduled for spring 2023.’

Notes:

  • In August 2020, Isle of Man Steam Packet appointed SeaQuest to take care of the supervision of their Ro-Pax contracted at HMD.
The site team, formed by up to 6 inspectors of SeaQuest, shall be guided by and respond to the SeaQuest Project Manager. The number of personnel on-site shall depend on actual inspection requirements and shall be enhanced during work peaks as/if necessary.
